The Rapid Breaks a New Ridership Record

During fiscal year 2008, The Rapid provided more than 9 million passenger trips.

The Rapid provided more than 9 million rides last year, an increase of 11.4% over the previous year’s numbers, and the fourth consecutive year of record-breaking public transportation trips in the greater Grand Rapids metro area. (Ridership tracking corresponds to the fiscal year, October 1 - September 30.)

“On behalf of The Rapid's six sponsoring cities, thank you to the community members who support The Rapid everyday with their use of our transit system. The Rapid board is committed to continue to build on this success,” commented Don Lawless, The Rapid’s Board Chair.

The record-breaking ridership report coincides with the release of the Governor’s Transportation Funding Task Force (TF2) report which was charged with reviewing how the state funds transportation infrastructure across all modes.

“Our growth shows the need for increased funding at the state level. Across the state, more and more trips are being taken on public transit. For communities to successfully meet those needs, systems need a state operating program that allows for the continued expansion of services” said Jennifer Kalczuk, external relations manager for The Rapid. “We are excited by the recommendations of the TF2 and look forward to working toward their implementation.”
