The city of Grand Rapids and the Michigan Department of Transportation are beginning a project this weekend to put Division Avenue between Wealthy and Michigan on a "road diet." This project will reduce the number of traffic lanes on this stretch of Division in an effort to slow down traffic, improve safety and retail accessibility, and promote "complete streets." There will be no interruption in service from The Rapid on this stretch of Division, however, there are 4 stops that will be adjusted or relocated on this stretch to work in cooperation with the "road diet." These adjustments/relocations are designed to compliment elements included in the road diet such as bike lanes and new turn lanes. Starting at Division and Wealthy, the stop on the southeast corner of the intersection serving Routes 1 and 2 northbound will be moved to the northeast corner of the intersection (in front of Cathedral Square) to accommodate a new northbound turn lane on Division. The stop at Monroe Center and Division (in front of the Civil War Monument) that serves Routes 6 and 9 will be moved north to Library and Division to accommodate a bike lane on Division. The stop across from the intersection of Library and Division that serves Route 9 southbound will be moved south to Division and Monroe Center. The stop at Division and Fountain that serves Routes 6 (southbound) and 9 (northbound) will be moved around the corner on Fountain. Service for Route 6 will continue at this stop, but it will no longer serve Route 9. The city of Grand Rapids is restriping Division this weekend, and these stop changes will take place early next week (6/20/11) once the Traffic Safety department gives the go-ahead. Thank you for your patience and flexibility as we continue to enhance our service. The Rapid is very excited to be cooperating in this effort to improve walk-ability, bike-ability, access to transit, and complete streets efforts in Grand Rapids.
